Extinguish burnout and rekindle anew

Burnout can result from an accumulation of long-term stress that has accumulated anywhere from 3 months to years.  Most link this with the workplace, but the long-term stress can come from a combination of areas in your life:  family pressures and obligations, looming deadlines on highly visible at work, a demanding partner.  It isn't' always all about work.

 

The duration is so long that the nervous system becomes slightly acclimatised to being in a state of constant stress.  Whilst this potentially sounds like it may be a positive thing (I’m sure I can hear *someone* thinking ‘yeah, we’re humans, we adapt. That’s a good thing….’), in this case the body is struggling to cope.  That tension is just building within the body, hormones like cortisol are pumping at higher levels and it’s taking a long-term toll on your body.  If you are, or are approaching burnout, you are probably seeing these warning signs:

  • Feelings of lethargy, exhaustion, unmotivated, and/or empty

  • Sleep issues.  (i.e. trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep and generally not being able to get 7-8 hours/night)

  • Increased irritability, moodiness, frustration, and perhaps resentful of friends and family making demands on your time

  • Body tension, joint pain, headaches (tension is often carried across the shoulders, neck and jaw)

  • Weight fluctuation.  (Some are impacted by the one-two punch of accumulated stress and lack of sleep that often leads on to comfort and/or stress eating).

 

Modern living and technology is putting a lot of demand on us.  We weren’t meant or built to live like we’re running back-to-back marathons.  If you aren’t heeding the warning signs to slow down, eventually your body will force the issue.
